The lymphatic system plays a vital role with our overall health. The lymphatic system is the "sewage system" which filters our blood (along with the cardiovascular system) and is instrumental with our immune system response to disease.
Main Functions of Lymphatic System
1. Draining lymph from tissues - The lymphatic system drains extra fluid (lymph) from the body tissues and returns it to the blood system. If this function is not performed properly swelling can occur (edema) on the body.
2. Absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins
3. Defense against microorganisms and disease - Lymph nodes and other lymphatic organs filter the lymph to remove microorganisms and other foreign particles. Lymphatic organs contain lymphocytes that destroy invading organisms.
